Lament and Dissent: workshop, action and live-streaming event
We cannot stand silently, head down as the world accepts a vile, hate fuelling, racist misogynist as president of United States of America. Here in England we are still reeling from the effects of Brexit seeing our country led by hate and fear. We watch daily as people struggle, suffer and die as a result of our military intervention and a lack of our humanitarian intervention. Through out time, when all were consumed with fear and great grief, at moments of upheaval women were asked to come, to keen, to wail and to channel the collective emotion that had no words. On January 20th at the exact moment that Trump is inaugurated we will gather, we will rage, we will howl. As women we must unite. We will use our presence, our voices and if each chooses, our bodies to lament, to rage, to keen. We will evoke the strength of our foremothers which has long been suppressed and raise as one voice in solidarity of our sisters oppressed. We will not be silenced.
We will be holding a workshop the day of the action. We will be exploring the narratives of Raising the Skirt along with traditional expressions of lament and dissent. We will be working with different practitioners to explore breath, voice, sound making and how to transform rage, grief and fear into a deep primal sound that will reverberate through the streets of Newcastle during our action. The action/reaction will also be live streamed inviting anyone into our action, our rage and our transformation.
This event – both workshop and action is open to all self-identifying women. Come raise your voice. Raise your awareness. Raising the Skirt is entirely self-funded – we do this because it is important and we feel it must be done. We are asking for a £25 donation to pay for invited facilitators, and technicians who will live stream and record our shattering, awakening sound. If you would like to contribute on behalf of anyone else, all donations are welcome.
Please send a short email outlining your interest in the workshop by the 13th January 2016 to us at firstname.lastname@example.org Lament and Dissent is a direct response to Trump’s ‘grab them by the pussy’, a statement, amongst many, which has caused international upset and outrage.
